First EVER LCCC Girls cricket team!
Date of Event : Sun Oct 21, 2018 8:36PM

An historic day today as Lane Cove Cricket Club, in its 125th year, fielded its first ever girls cricket team!

The Lane Cove Healy side, captained by Annie Stanwell, took on the might of North Sydney in a T20 match at Primrose Park.  A late withdrawal from the competition on Friday by Gordon unfortunately saw our Lane Cove Perry side cooling their heels with a last-minute bye.

All the girls had been training strongly over the last few weeks and were super keen to be able to just get out and play, especially after a couple of weeks of wet weather.

North Sydney won the toss and elected to bat. The Lane Cove girls bowled and fielded strongly taking 6 wickets, including two catches, to hold North Sydney to just 32 off their 20 overs. Of that just 18 runs were scored off the bat, so we managed to hold them to less than 1 run per over which is excellent. Some really strong keeping by Genevieve and Elizabeth (supported by some good fielding at fine leg) ensured that we gave away only 1 bye.

All bowlers bowled well with Annie taking 2 wickets, Sam taking 2 wickets and 1 each to Maggie and Eliza. Two good catches by Lila and Genevieve.

Genevieve and Maggie opened the batting and got us off to a solid start with two fine 4's from Genevieve a real highlight.  Lila and Eliza then came together and built an excellent partnership and demonstrated some outstanding running between wickets with good clear calling and great backing up.  Sam and Annie then built on that base and Elizabeth finished off our innings in a very watchful careful fashion against some quality bowling.  We lost 4 wickets, 2 of which were runouts, which was very good – we looked to try and score when we could and the coach was very happy with the positive intent with which we played.  In the end we finished up with 76, of which 37 runs came off the bat, so almost two an over.

So in our first ever game for the club, we got the W.  while that was nice it was a tremendously encouraging effort and great to see the things we had practiced over the past 4 weeks being put into practice - the backing up and calling, sliding the bat, high arms from bowlers and a positive and enthusiastic effort in the field supported by our teammates.

A wonderful start and some good skills on display and some pretty happy and excited girls at the end who had a bunch of fun.

Go the Covies!
